Testicular and Prostate Cancer

Testicular cancer is relatively rare and completely curable if found and treated early. Most are found by self-examination or by a partner and are enlarged painless lumps, typically pea sized but sometimes as big as a marble or an egg. Besides lumps, any other abnormality such as an enlarged testicle or a dull ache in the lower abdomen or groin should be checked out.

Prostate cancer usually affects men over 50 and is the second most common cancer in British men. Caught early on, like testicular cancer, it is a very treatable disease. Being aware of the signs that something might be wrong, and going for regular health checks can help you catch the disease before it becomes more serious.

Latest Treatment for Prostate Cancer

The Kings Oak Hospital in Enfield is now able to offer the latest minimal invasive treatment of localised prostate cancer. The Kings Oak Hospital is one of only a few hospitals in the UK able to offer this new treatment. The treatment that will be available to patients is called HIFU “High Intensify Ultrasound”. HIFU enables the surgeon to focus on the prostate area only therefore ensuring that surrounding tissues are not damaged. In addition HIFU also eliminates the need for radiotherapy as well as the surgical removal of the prostate. Many patients cannot tolerate the side effects associated with radiation. Additionally not all patients can or want to undergo surgery. For these patients HIFU offers an excellent alternative.

If you are suffering any irregularity or difficulty in passing urine then it is advisable to see your GP who can refer you for a full assessment carried out by a Consultant Urologist at The Kings Oak Hospital or The Garden Hospital. Full tests will be carried out and necessary treatment, if required, will be discussed.
